Make massage a part of your fitness regimen in 2020

It’s the start of a brand new year and with the start of every new year comes new year resolutions. Most of us tend to have at least one new year’s resolution that is health or fitness related, and that tends to be amongst the first to fall by the wayside. The reason for this is simple- any fitness-related activity tends to leave your body (mainly your muscles) sore and hurting for the next few days. It becomes quite difficult to convince your body that something is good for it when it constantly leaves you feeling worse in the immediate aftermath.

One of the best ways to limit the toll exercise takes on your body is to get regular massages as a part of your workout regimen. Massage is one of the best ways to recover from a hard workout session for several reasons as illustrated below:

  1. Pain Relief: An intense workout can cause your muscles to tighten, which can be quite painful for a couple of days post-workout. These aches and pains can add up over time and start to affect your ability to exercise. Regular massages will help loosen up those muscles and make sure those pesky aches and pains don’t hamper your ability to workout!
  2. Eliminate toxins: Ever wondered why you feel stiff when you work out after a long time? It’s because your body starts to discharge lactic acid when you go beyond what your fitness level will allow you to do in terms of exercise. Massages can help remove this lactic acid that builds up in your muscles, ensuring you’re more than ready for the next session.
  3. Improves Flexibility: When you use massage to deal with muscle tightening, the quicker recovery time helps increase your flexibility- a side effect that does wonders for your fitness routine and reduces the risk of injury.

The benefits of regular massage in conjunction with a steady fitness routine are manifold. But don’t just take our word for it- book your appointment today and find out for yourself! If you would like to make massage a regular part of your fitness routine, Yinyang has several bulk massage deals that make the massages more cost-effective.

Wishing you a happy and healthy 2020!

Benefits of Regular Deep Tissue Massage

Whether you’re an athlete with a daily high demand placed on your body or recovering from an injury or illness, deep tissue massage likely has some benefits to offer you.

Deep tissue massage is a type of massage therapy that focuses on realigning deeper layers of muscles and connective tissue. It is especially helpful for chronic aches and pains such as stiff neck and upper back, lower back pain, leg muscle tightness, and sore shoulders.

Some of the strokes used are similar to classical massage therapy, but the movement is slower and the pressure is deeper and concentrated on areas of tension and pain in order to reach the sub-layer of the muscles and fascia (the connective tissue surrounding muscles).

In order for the therapist to reach the deeper musculature, it is essential that the muscles are relaxed.

At certain points during the massage, most people find there is usually some discomfort and pain.

It is important to communicate to the therapist when things hurt and if any soreness or pain you experience is outside your comfort range.

There is usually some stiffness or pain after a deep tissue massage, but it should subside within a day or so. The massage therapist may recommend applying ice to the area after the massage.

The benefits of regular deep tissue massages include:

1. Treatment of Chronic Back Pain: A recent study concluded that regular deep tissue massages are far more helpful in combating chronic back pain than a regular therapeutic massage. The study was conducted by providing regular massages of both varieties to test subjects over a 10 day period to compare effectiveness.

2. Helps lower High Blood Pressure: A study published in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine found that deep tissue massage had positive effects on systolic, diastolic and mean arterial blood pressure readings in adults with pain and symptoms of high blood pressure. The study involved 263 volunteers with an average age of nearly 50. The results spoke for themselves, with average systolic pressure reducing by 10.4 mm/Hg, diastolic pressure reducing by 5.3 mm/Hg, mean arterial pressure reducing by 7.0 mm/Hg and average heart rate reducing by 10.8 beats per minute following massage treatment.

3. Reduces and helps with Scar Tissue: Injuries can cause muscle inflammation which prevents proper blood circulation in the affected areas. Deep tissue massages help ensure proper circulation, leading to faster and more complete recoveries.

4. Reduces symptoms of Arthritis: People suffering from symptoms of arthritis such as joint pain, limited range of motion and stiffness should opt for a firm massage instead of a light massage. A light massage tends to lift the heart rate rather than relax the body, which is the desired effect of the massage in case someone is suffering from arthritis. Regular deep tissue massages will help ensure that symptoms are manageable and your day-to-day life is relatively unaffected.

What is TCM?

Traditional Chinese Medicine (or TCM) is a guide or a path to a holistic life that nourishes the physical, mental, spiritual and emotional facets of a person.

TCM is one of the oldest recorded healing arts in the world. Despite that, it is once again gaining in popularity, unlike most of its contemporaries. This is because the principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine are as relevant today as they were thousands of years ago. The reason for its continued relevance is simple- it works!

Traditional Chinese Medicine encompasses a wide range of techniques such as herbal medicine, acupuncture, cupping therapy, gua sha, tui na (massage), die-da (bonesetter), qigong (exercise) and dietary therapy. One of the most fundamental tenets of traditional chinese medicine is that the body’s vital energy (ch’i or qi) circulates through channels (or meridians) throughout the entire body, tying it together. It is for this reason that TCM requires treatment of the body as a whole, rather than just treating a specific problem area. Traditional Chinese Medicine has evolved over the years, incorporating Western concepts where necessary so as to provide patients with the best chance of healing.

By using TCM, you can prevent problems before they even occur as you work to fix imbalances in yourself which could have otherwise manifested as problems in the future.

At Yinyang Connection Massage Center, we incorporate principles from Traditional Chinese Medicine into our massage to help ensure balance within the body and mind.
